Tampa Bay Rays at Chicago Cubs

The Cubs continued their 100th anniversary celebration of Wrigley Field with 1988 throwbacks today, against the Tampa Bay Rays, who debuted a new road version of their 1979 Fauxbacks.

St. Louis Cardinals at Tampa Bay Rays

The Cardinals wore 1950's era uniforms, while the Rays wore uniforms of the 1950s Tampa Smokers, a minor league team.  In an effort to be politically correct, the Rays removed the cigar from the original Smokers uniforms.

Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays

The Orioles wore all-orange, which they wore twice in 1971, while the Rays dressed as the minor league Tampa Tarpons of the mid-1970s.

Oakland Athletics at Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays finally do a throwback to their own uniforms, the inaugural 1998 season. Or maybe it was the 1999 season - they apparently didn't get the caps right. The A's wore an early-to-mid 1980's dark green throwback.

On African-America Heritage Day, the Pirates dressed as the Pittsburgh Crawfords and the Rays dressed as the Jacksonville Red Caps for their interleague game in St. Petersburg.

Houston Astros at Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays dressed as the St. Petersburg Pelicans of the short-lived Senior Professional Baseball Association of 1989, while the Astros wore their "tequila sunrise" uniforms of the 1980s.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Tampa Bay Devil Rays

The Dodgers dressed as the 1955 Champion Brooklyn Dodgers. According to Bill Henderson, the Dodgers:


"dressed in complete flannel uniforms by Ebbetts Field Flannels, however the last uniform to have the Brooklyn script on the front was in 1945. The team knew, but wanted the jerseys to celebrate Brooklyn anyway"


The Devil Rays dressed as the minor league St. Pete Saints from the same year. Henderson further notes that both teams wore flannel, and that:

"while MLB TBTC games have become popular and even rather common, on-field uniforms made of real flannel have become rather rare, as the teams opt for the old styles sewn in double-knit fabric."

Atlanta Braves at Tampa Bay Devil Rays

The Braves and Devil Rays played a game at Tropicana Field dressed in 1975 uniforms, the Braves, their '75 road unis, and the Devil Rays were wearing uniforms of the 1975 Tampa Tarpons, a FSL minor league team.

Chicago White Sox at Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Both teams wore replica uniforms as part of a salute to 100 years of American League baseball. The White Sox had the uniforms of their 1906 World Series championship team. Tampa Bay wore the uniform of the 1922 Florida State League champion St. Petersburg Saints
